4 out of 5 stars mother of 4 year old girl.... nice gift   December 28, 2009

Santa gave this to my 4 year old daughter for Christmas. She was a little frustrated at first, but after I made one and showed her how to do it she loved it. she likes making her own designs better than the templates right now. the pen hasn't given us any trouble yet. the only thing i would recommend is to buy a refill kit. it does come with a nice amount of beads, but after 2 or 3 pictures you start to run out of colors. also, i really spray the beads to make them stick, after about 20 min. I check to see if i can remove them from the tray without breaking it. if i can, i put it on a piece of wax paper or plastic wrap and spay one side, after it dries turn it over and spay the other side. this helps to make it a little more durable for kids to play with.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a nine year old girl   December 26, 2009

Santa brought this gift for my daughter for Christmas. She really likes it. However, there are just a few templates and we will need refills very soon. It says to dry them 10 minutes. The web site says 20 or more. With simple designs, it has taken us over an hour to dry. You also have to be sure to spray them with enough water to melt the beads. The directions also recommend you turn it over the spray the other side also for better sticking. We did this and I think they would have fallen apart if we hadn't. One of the Pixos reviewers said there were more templates on the Pixos site. I confirmed that. But you need a ID code from your kit to access it and my kit doesn't have one.

4 out of 5 stars Creative and fun   December 26, 2009

How do you play this toy?
You place the dots by following a pattern, spray with water, wait, and then remove from the tray with the dots all fused together.

My 5-yr old son loves this. He actually loves every step from placing the dots into the pen to the final water spraying. It comes with a pen with 4 chambers to separate different colors. The red dome top part serves as a little funnel when you attach it upside down to make it easier to put the dots into the pen. There is a small attachment with a green jelly like nib to pick up individual dots if they mess up. You have two design trays and three double sided templates. May I remind you that the 2 trays are for different patterns, so if the template does not coincide with the tray holes then it is designed for the other tray. To place each dot, you have to press a button on the side of the pen. To choose a different color, you twist the pen to open up a different color chamber.

The next step after placing all the dots into its corresponding hole is to spray the pattern with water. You have to wait approximately 20 minutes before you can take it out from the tray. Actually, you just need to check the dots and the tray if they are completely dry. It may take only 15 minutes or more depending how soaked they are. Removing the pattern can be a tricky part. You have to be careful or they may break apart. What we do is scrape it carefully with the template.

My son need to be guided in the beginning. He gets frustrated when he accidentally nudged the tray and most of the dots were thrown out of place. After a few more tries he was able to be more careful and he can do the whole process from A to Z.

This is a nice creative toy. It is guaranteed to engage them at least half an hour or more of constructive and productive time play. It is a little expensive, which is my only gripe. Refills are also not cheap and does not give you a lot of dots.

3 out of 5 stars Pen   January 24, 2010

It took me some time to realize the top of the pen works as a funnel. I bought this for the kids I work with thinking it would be a great activity. The pen jams if there is full row of beads, but now when there is a half row.

3 out of 5 stars An activity for older kids.   January 9, 2010

My 5 year old has been asking for these since he saw them advertised on TV, so Santa brought these by on Christmas. It's a fun concept, but for an older child. Both my children (my other son is 6.5) needed a great deal of help. So much so, I was doing the activity not the kids. The dots are very hard to load into the "pen", and they don't place in the tray as easily as they make it look on TV. After just a couple of attempts at using the Pixos, the kids lost interest. I think an older child would be able to handle this craft much easier, and so I've tucked the remaining Pixos away for a later date. Maybe we'll give them another shot in a year or so.
